The 200th ODI milestone seems to have turned out as an anti-climax, first for Rohit Sharma and today for Mithali Raj, as the Women in Blue failed to inflict a 3-0 whitewash on the White Ferns.
Closing on the heels of a batting collapse from Rohit Sharma's side yesterday, Mithali Raj-led Women in Blue suffered a similar batting collapse to hand the White Ferns' an eight-wicket win in the third ODI.
Asked to bat first, the law of averages finally caught up with Smriti Mandhana as the left-hander fell for 1 off 7 balls against the incisive bowling of Anna Peterson.
Peterson, 4-28, was the spearhead of the White Ferns', as she and Lea Tahuhu [3-26] wrecked through India's batting unit to skittle them our for 149 in 44 overs. Deepti Sharma top-scored for India with 52, but again it was their untested middle-order that failed to rise to the occasion after a collapse from top-order.
Chasing 150, the White Ferns' lost Lauren Down for 10 [19] but Suzie Bates [57] and skipper Amy Satterthwaite [66] scored half-centuries and stitched an 84-run stand for the second wicket to consolidate the run-chase. Poonam Yadav [1-31] knocked over Suzie Bates for 57 before Devine [17] along with the skipper steered the hosts to an eight-wicket win.
The caravan of the India Women tour of New Zealand will now move to the shortest format of the game with the first of the three T20I set to be played at Wellington on February 06.
Brief Score:-
India [149, Deepti Sharma 52, Anna Peterson 4-28] beat New Zealand [2-153, Satterthwaite 66*, Bates 57, Yadav 1-31] by eight wickets
