Ishant Sharma's 5-42 coupled with his gritty batting and Jadeja's half-century was at the heart of a dominating display from Team India on the second day of the Antigua Test.

Morning Session: Jaddu's fifty and Ishant's grit takes India to 297

Just like yesterday, Kemar Roach provided the West Indies with the perfect of starts. The West Indies struck in the second over of the morning, removing the dangerous Rishabh Pant who nicked off to Shai Hope.

But Jadeja and Ishant ensured that the West Indies hopes of restricting Team India for less than 250 were squandered with a dodged 8th wicket stand of 60. Jadeja played some delightful strokes every time the West Indies erred in their lengths while Ishant, like a gritty tailender that he is, stood like a rock even as the Windies pacers tested him.

With the duo threatening to take the score past the 300-run mark, Shanon Gabriel provided the much-needed relief for the hosts by nipping out both Ishant and Shami in the space of three balls. With only Bumrah left for company, Jadeja took the attack to the Windies bowlers stroking beautiful cover-drives before lofting Chase over his head after reaching his 3rd Test half-century in his past 7 Test matches.

Afternoon Session: India chip away at wickets after Windies got off to a bright start

John Campbell came out with positive intent. Anything drifting onto his legs or wide outside the off-stump was flicked or cover-driven off Ishant Sharma's first two overs. The right-hander stroked a boundary in each of his first four overs. The Indian new ball opening- Ishant in particular- could not make the first bowl count, and the signs of rustiness were quite apparent as they erred with their line (strangling down leg side) on a plethora of occasions.

Mohammad Shami turned to be the partnership breaker for the visitors' aa Campbell dragged one onto his stumps in the formers first over. Campell's dismissal brought debutant Brooks to the crease and sensing the opportunity to turn the screws, Kohli brought Bumrah from the end Ishant was bowling. India tightened the screws substantially post the dismissal of Campbell.

The next seven overs produced just 5 runs as Bumrah and Shami tested the duo of Brooks and Brathwaite. Brooks, in particular, was tested with the short-pitch stuff by Bumrah. The debutant was up to the challenge though. Brooks looked well assured of himself at the crease and despite not being allowed to get his maiden Test run for 13 balls, did not lose his patience.

Braithwaite, on the other hand, was his usual self: assured, patient, gritty. India needed a moment of brilliance in the field, and it came via Ishant Sharma's diving catch off his own.bowling to dismiss the irresistible Brathwaite. Ishant came back brilliantly after an indifferent first spell and was aptly rewarded. One wicket brought two for Team India as Jadeja indices an outside edge off Brooks; one that ricochets off Pant's thighs, only for Rahane to gobble it at first slip.

Tea Session: Ishant wrecks havoc to put India in pole position

Jasprit Bumrah didn't take much time after the Tea break to register his 50th Test wicket when he pinned Bravo in front of stumps for 18.

Roston Chase continued his good form against the Indians. The right-hander was positive in his intent and played some brilliant strokes while at the same time respecting the discipline shown by the Indian bowlers. But just as he was nearing a half-century, the right-hander fell into the trap laid by Kohli and Sharma. After having placed Rahul at short midwicket, Sharma bowled a length ball on Chase's pad, who in an attempt to clip it ended up hitting it straight to short midwicket's throat

Shimron Hetmayer survived some close calls by Bumrah initially before he and Shai Hope accumulated 44 runs for the sixth wicket stand on both sides of the brief rain break. But this was Sharma's day. And, it got even better when he claimed his third wicket of the innings after Shai Hope played across the line and nicked off to Pant, who took a good dying catch. WI 6-174.

And, he wasn't done that. After having already taken a blinder off his own bowling, Sharma claimed another stunner to dismiss the dangerous-looking Hetmayer for his fourth wicket. Kemar Roach couldn't do much either as he edged Ishant straight to Kohli in slips to give Ishant his 9th five-wicket haul in Test cricket helping India end the day in a pole position.

On a day where Ishant Sharma scored more runs and played more balls than any English batsman, the old warhorse wrecked through the Windies batting unit with a five-wicket haul; his third in the West Indies.

The performance was a testimony to Ishant's athleticism, temperament, and discipline. The fast bowler came back brilliantly after an indifferent first spell and ended up inflicting a mini-collapse on the Windies late in the day to help India secure a pole position at the end of the second day.

With the hosts just having just two wickets at their disposal, the Indians will look to wrap up the innings as quickly as possible and then build on the lead in the second innings.
