Its almost like two different teams' are representing the Women in Blue in T20Is and 50-over cricket. One- a calm and collected unit which is just going about their process to rack up match and series wins consistently, the other- there is complete hara-kiri.
It was testified to the hilt today as yet another batting collapse saw India succumb to their fourth consecutive loss in T20Is, dating to that heartbreaking day in the Caribbean where they capitulated to England in the semi-final. Smriti Mandhanas's captaincy debut could not get a worse possible start as yet another batting meltdown saw England coast to a comprehensive 41-run victory.
That fast-bowler Shikha Pandey [23] ended-up as Team India's leading run-scorer in the game speaks volumes of the struggles of the batting unit. Chasing 161, set by the English, India's top and middle-order were rocked thanks to some incisive bowling from Katherine Brunt [2-21] and Linsey Smith [2-22] and at one stage found themselves reeling at 5-46. It would have been a disaster had Deepti Sharma [22], Arundhati Reddy [18] and Shikha Pandey [23 not out] not dug in.
But, in the end, it proved to be in a lost cause, as the innings meandered to 6-119; 41 runs still adrift of the target. This, after India, won the toss and opted to put the English in.
England's problems in the ODI series- a series they eventually lost, was their openers' inability to get their side off to a good start. But, this time, Tammy Beaumont [62] and Dani Wyatt [35] ensured that they dug in, stitching a vital 89-run stand for the 1st wicket. For India, Shikha Pandey [1-18] and Poonam Yadav were the most economical bowlers but the others went for aplenty as Heather Knight scored a whirlwind 20-ball 40 to take her side to what turned out to be the match-winning total in the end.
Tammy Beaumont has adjudged the 'Player of the Match' for her 57-ball 62.
Brief Score- England [4-160, Tammy Beaumont 62, Sarah Taylor 40*, Shikha Pandey 1-18] beat India [119, Shikha Pandey 23*, Katherine Brunt 2-21, Linsey Smith 2-22]
