The Battle of IPL 2020: Delhi Capitals vs Mumbai Indians

11 Oct 2020 135 Views Cricket News

Indian Premier League 2020 is almost halfway done. We have seen the teams enough to assess their qualities, weakness, and anticipate how the IPL 2020 will unfold!

And as of now, with no supernatural turnaround taken into consideration, two teams have a visible advantage over the rest: IPL Table Toppers- Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians!

Surprisingly every cricket pundit had these two in their top four list before the IPL 2020 began. But now that we have seen them play six times, there are crucial elements of what has separated these two from the rest of the teams, let's dive straight into it:

(I) The Bowling Attack:

(a) Mumbai Indians- MI over the years of their success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) have done exceedingly well in maintaining and even improving their bowling lineup.

This season was no different. Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and James Pattinson have led the attack from the front. The trio has a jaw-dropping total of 30 IPL Wickets between them in just six games. The fact that IPL 2020 has seen so much of the batsman, that number is worth applauding. Also, their economy rates have been less than 8.5 which is pretty decent, considering that they bowl during powerplay or at the death when the batsmen are most in the mood to score big.

Leg spinner, Rahul Chahar has only made it more difficult for the opposition to manage scoring runs in the middle overs. The 21-year old has a total of 7 wickets so far. All-rounders Krunal Pandya and Kieron Pollard have also been handy, providing captain Rohit Sharma with multiple options to look up to as per the conditions. So even without Hardik Pandya being available to bowl, the defending champions have been deadly with the ball.  (b) Delhi Capitals-

DC on the other hand have clicked well. One of their key problems last season was Kagiso Rabada being the only option to look up to when the going got tough. This IPL season they look like a more balanced and deep bowling attack. Though Rabada still is the Purple Cap holder with 15 wickets in six games, Anrich Nortje with 8 wickets has eased the pressure off his Proteas teammate.

Youngest IPL captain this season, Shreyas Iyer has had big names such as Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin to choose from apart from his two set pacers. A noticeable issue can be the performance of Harshal Patel in the absence of Indian International superstar, Ishant Sharma. But the other bowlers have gelled well so far to make DC a superb bowling enterprise.

(ii) The top order:

(a) Mumbai Indians:

There is no need to introduce and talk about the statistics of Rohit Sharma. The man is a believer and symbol of the class who tends to score whenever his side needs him to. His partner in the opening, Quinton de Kock hasn't fired so much in IPL 2020, barring a 67 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Sharjah. But that being said, MI have the luxury of two openers who can fire big on their day and that always plays on the opposition's head.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan haven't been consistent but they have played big on their days to make it clear that the MI top four are solid in terms of setting the stage for their big all-rounders who can take the score to beyond opposition's reach. (b) Delhi Capitals-

For DC, this season the top four have given exceptional performances. Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant have added to their team's top order strength nicely so far.

The four of them have scored 709 runs for DC in IPL 2020 as of yet. Dhawan hasn't been at his firing best but good for the team that Shaw has taken the responsibility on his shoulders and has delivered more than often.

(iii) The finishers: (a) Mumbai Indians-

With runs in the death overs being the absolute necessity in IPL T20, it is quintessential for a franchise to have big finishers firing on all cylinders. For MI that never really seems to be the problem and the Pandya-Pollard-Pandya trio always seems to perform in some combination or the other.

While Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard look set and in a good mood and have scored a total of 298 runs for MI at a strike rate of more than 150 each, Krunal Pandya also gave a major scare with his four-ball 20 in Sharjah against SRH. A left-hander is anyways healthy for the team's combination! (b) Delhi Capitals-

For DC this year, Marcus Stoinis and Shimron Hetmyer have taken the destructive role. The Australia all-rounder who also has wickets to his name has also blasted 163 IPL runs for his team at a strike rate of 176. Caribbean swashbuckling talent, Shimron Hetmyer has also got into the act in the last few games scoring at the strike rate of almost 150.

So, as we look at all the stats and the magical performances so far in the IPL 2020, there seems to be enough evidence to suggest that DC and MI are going to lead the IPL Standings in the league this season. If that is, nothing 2020-like happens. (This article is brought to you by cricketnews.com)
